Domaine des Tourelles, Carignan Vieilles Vignes, 2021
Old-vine Carignan from one of the oldest wineries in the Arab world. Domaine des Tourelles was founded in 1868 by French adventurer François-Eugène Brun in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley; after the last Brun descendant died in 2003, the estate passed to the Issa and Issa el-Khoury families, with winemaker Faouzi Issa now running production alongside his twin sister Johanne and sister Christiane. The Carignan Vieilles Vignes comes from a fifty-plus-year-old block in the Amik vineyard at over 1,000 meters elevation, where Bekaa's relentless sun is moderated by altitude. Hand-harvested, indigenous-yeast fermented in concrete, aged two years in concrete — no oak, just fruit and rock and time. The result is a Carignan with vibrant acidity, structured tannin, and a sun-and-spice character that's unmistakably Mediterranean.
