Domaine des Tourelles, Merweh & Obeidi Vieilles Vignes Bekaa Valley, 2020
Lebanon has been making wine for thousands of years, and this bottle is a direct line to that history. Domaine des Tourelles — founded in 1868 and one of the country's oldest working wineries — bottles this white from two indigenous grapes, Merwah and Obeideh, off old ungrafted vines, some over a century old and grown high in the mountains among the cedars. Winemaker Faouzi Issa fermented each variety separately with wild yeasts and held it in steel to keep every ounce of freshness. It's generous, mineral and unlike anything else on the shelf — a taste of a wine culture older than most of the wine world.
