Domaine des Trois Filles, Bandol Rouge, 2016

Nine years on a classical Bandol, from a small family estate that does things properly. Domaine des Trois Filles took its current form in 2013 when the three Arlon daughters—Audrey, Léonie, and Justine—took over the family vines in La Cadière-d'Azur with their parents. Audrey had been assistant winemaker at the great Domaine du Gros 'Noré before stepping over to her family's nine hectares. The Bandol Rouge is Mourvèdre-led in the appellation's tradition, fermented and macerated in tank, then aged eighteen months in wooden barrels to soften the structure that defines great Bandol. 2016 was a fine vintage in Provence, and at nearly a decade old this is exactly where Bandol gets interesting—the tannins resolved, the wild-herb savor coming forward, and the Mourvèdre starting to show its leather-and-game side.
