Sitting between Terrasses de l'Empire and the flagship Coteau de Vernon in Christine Vernay's hierarchy, Les Chaillées de l'Enfer comes from precipitously steep terraced plots in the heart of Condrieu — 'enfer' translating to 'hell,' a nod to the punishing terrain. The vines average well over fifty years old, planted on the appellation's signature decomposed granite and biotite, and the wine is fermented and aged in barrel (a portion new) on the lees, without malolactic fermentation, to preserve cut. It's a Condrieu of tension and structure — the apricot and stone-fruit perfume of Viognier disciplined by mineral grip and a saline, long finish. Built for the table, built to age.
