Domaine Michel Mallard, Ladoix 1er Cru "Les Grechons", 2016
The Mallard family has farmed in Ladoix-Serrigny for five generations, and the domaine has been on a real upswing—helped by the fact that Michel Mallard also runs winemaking at the celebrated Domaine d'Eugenie in Vosne-Romanee. 'Les Grechons' is a Premier Cru in Ladoix, planted to Chardonnay on the eastern flank of the hill of Corton, with shallow, gravelly soil and vines 50 to 60 years old (the name itself nods to gravel). It's vinified partly in tank and partly in French oak, then rested before bottling, giving a white with both cut and texture. Ladoix flies under the radar, which makes whites like this a savvy find. The 2016 has some age and is drinking well now.
