Elvio Cogno, Barolo Cascina Nuova, 2020
The Cogno Barolo to know if you don't know Cogno yet. Cascina Nuova is the entry to the family's lineup, drawn from the younger vines of their flagship MGA Ravera in Novello — and "entry" here just means earlier-drinking, not lesser. Valter Fissore (son-in-law of the late Elvio Cogno) farms Ravera as carefully as any cru in the Langhe; Cogno is the single largest grower in the MGA. The 2020 — a warm, balanced vintage that has produced exceptionally charming Baroli — was aged 24 months in large Slavonian botti, in the traditional Cogno style. The wine is pure Nebbiolo: violets, sour cherry, rose petal, fine tannin, savory length. Drinkable now with air, built to reward another five-plus years in the cellar.
