Gaja, Rossj Bass Langhe, 2023
The Gaja white that confuses everyone — and rewards everyone who tries it. Rossj-Bass is named for Angelo Gaja's daughter Rossana ("Rossj"); "Bass" nods to the lower-slope parcel where the vines were planted in 1984. Despite the Piedmont address, this is Chardonnay-led (with a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc), made in the Gaja house style: aromatically restrained, structurally serious, built for the long haul. The 2023 shows the family's signature precision — a Langhe Chardonnay with the cut and salinity of altitude, the depth of careful lees work, and the polish that has made Gaja Gaja. Gaia Gaja and her siblings now lead, but Angelo's vision is everywhere in the glass. One of Italy's most quietly accomplished whites.
