Girolamo Russo, Feudo Etna Rosso, 2022
Etna's prodigal son returns. Giuseppe Russo was studying to be a pianist when his father Girolamo — a charcoal seller who sold grapes from the family home in Passopisciaro — died unexpectedly in 2005. Giuseppe came home, took over the vines, and turned them into one of the most respected addresses on Etna's north slope. Feudo is the entry tier — Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio sourced across his contrade holdings near Randazzo, all rooted in the black volcanic sand the locals call sciara. It's lighter on its feet than the single-cru bottlings, but unmistakably Etna: red-fruited, transparent, charged with volcanic energy. 2022 was a warm but balanced vintage.
