Girolamo Russo, San Lorenzo Etna Rosso, 2022
The largest and highest of Russo's contrade holdings. San Lorenzo sits near Randazzo on the north slope of Etna, climbing up into volcanic black sand at altitude — and it produces the most aromatic, ethereal of Giuseppe Russo's single-contrada reds. Giuseppe left a career as a concert pianist to take over the family vines after his father Girolamo died in 2005, and he has spent the last two decades farming organically, transforming a bulk-grape operation into one of Etna's reference estates. Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Cappuccio, aged in large barrel with minimal intervention. 2022 brought warmth and balance — San Lorenzo's altitude kept the lift intact. Open with twenty minutes of air.
