Gvantsa's Wine, Aladasturi Red, 2023
Aladasturi is a rare native red grape of western Georgia, lighter in color and frame than the better-known Saperavi but with a wild, savory charm all its own. Gvantsa Abuladze is one of three sibling winemakers (with her sister Baia and brother Giorgi) at the family winery in the village of Obcha, deep in the hillside vineyards of Imereti. Gvantsa has made the revival of Aladasturi her personal mission, championing a grape almost no one outside Georgia has heard of. The result is a thrilling, juicy, lightly grippy red with a sense of place you cannot get from anywhere else. A small-production bottle from one of the rising voices of the new Georgian wine scene.
