Harper's Rest, Moon Dust Vineyard Chardonnay, 2023
The name comes straight out of the ground: "moon dust" is what growers call the pale, fine Goldridge sand of the Sebastopol Hills, the coolest, foggiest far corner of the Russian River Valley. Harper's Rest is a brand-new California venture from the Underwood family, farming two estate vineyards devoted only to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Moon Dust block was first planted back in 1996, and it's now worked regeneratively and organically, then vinified with a hands-off touch: native ferments, no additives, fourteen months in French oak resting on its lees. This is a debut release, and it arrives with the kind of cool-site tension that makes coastal Sonoma Chardonnay worth chasing.
