Ignaz Niedrist, Trias Mitterberg Weiss, 2022
The Trias is Ignaz Niedrist's three-grape statement white from Alto Adige. "Trias" is the Triassic geology beneath the vineyards but also the trio in the bottle: a Chardonnay-led blend with Petit Manseng and Incrocio Manzoni, drawn from steep east-facing slopes above Appiano Monte at 450-600 meters and from terraces in Cornaiano. The Niedrist family has been here since the mid-1800s; Ignaz and Elisabeth reactivated the bottling estate in 1989, working organically (uncertified), keeping yields a third below appellation maximums. The Chardonnay portion ferments and goes through malolactic in barrique and tonneau; the Petit Manseng and Manzoni ferment in concrete (without malolactic). The 2022 is ripe but lifted, golden-fruited but stony — Alto Adige whites at their most thoughtful.
