Il Verro, Pallagrello Bianco "Verginiano", 2022
The Bourbon kings of Naples once prized this grape above French wine and poured it at the Royal Palace of Caserta, and then powdery mildew and phylloxera nearly erased it from the earth. Pallagrello Bianco survives today largely because producers like Il Verro went looking for it. In the hills of Campania's Terra di Lavoro, a group of childhood friends replanted these near-extinct local varieties on volcanic, sandy soils and farm them organically. This bottling is Pallagrello Bianco on its own, fermented in steel to keep it bright and true to itself. A rescued grape with a royal past, back on the table where it belongs.
