Joseph Colin, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chateniere, 2019
The name Colin is white Burgundy royalty, and Joseph is the newest member of the dynasty to strike out solo—a son of Marc Colin who split off in 2017 to build his own domaine. La Chateniere is one of Saint-Aubin's finest premier crus, a steep slope that runs right up against the Puligny-Montrachet border, sharing the same great limestone hillside as some legendary vineyards next door. That geology shows: this is chiseled, chalky, precise Chardonnay that drinks well above its address. Native-yeast fermentation, old-vine fruit, and a light touch in the cellar let the site speak. Grand-cru neighborhood, without the grand-cru theatrics.
