Joseph Roty, Marsannay 'Les Ouzeloy', 2009
Joseph Roty is famous for rare, expensive Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus, but those in the know snap up his Marsannays, and this is his very best one. Les Ouzeloy is Roty's top lieu-dit in Marsannay, the northernmost village of the Cote d'Or, where limestone soils slope east just before the suburbs of Dijon take over. As Flatiron's Jeff put it, this wine is polished and ages beautifully, and here you get to skip the cellaring and go straight to drinking mature red Burgundy. Roty is one of the great old traditional domaines of Gevrey, in the lineage of Jouan or Chevillon, and at fifteen-plus years this 2009 is in a lovely place. A back-vintage gem from a name that rarely comes cheap.
