Alex Starey has long been one of our favorite South African winemakers, and Keermont — his mountain estate high on the Helderberg in Stellenbosch — is one of the country's quietly great addresses. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes off the Cottage Lane vineyard, perched at 320 meters on the Helderberg's mid-slopes; the elevation, exposure, and clay soils give Starey a fine-grained, naturally tense version of South African Cab. The 2021 is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, raised for 21 months in seasoned French barriques before hand-bottling.
