Kozlovic, Malvazija, 2024

Malvazija Istarska — the indigenous white grape of Istria — has quietly become one of the most exciting whites coming out of the Adriatic, and Kožlović is arguably the producer most responsible for that reputation. The family won Best White Wine in Croatia with their 1997 Malvazija and has been the benchmark ever since. Now in its fourth generation under Gianfranco and Antonella, the winery farms hillside white-clay soils in the Vale valley near the medieval village of Momjan in northern Croatian Istria, just over the Slovenian border. Stainless-steel vinification keeps the focus on the grape's natural charm: white peach, green apple, acacia blossom, a touch of almond and dried herb, and a clean, salty finish that broadcasts its proximity to the sea. Mediterranean white wine done with quiet seriousness — and one of the best-value bottles in the shop.
