La Chenade, Lalande-de-Pomerol, 2021
This is Pomerol-pedigree winemaking in a more affordable bottle: La Chenade comes from the late Denis Durantou, the celebrated hand behind Chateau L'Eglise-Clinet, made from a parcel in his Lalande-de-Pomerol holdings just north of Pomerol proper. The blend is roughly 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, grown on sandy-gravelly soils and aged in French oak with about 30% new. Durantou had a gift for coaxing plush, precise, beautifully balanced wine out of Bordeaux's right bank, and La Chenade delivers that polish without the Pomerol price tag. It's medium-bodied, supple, and ready to enjoy. A reliable, never-disappoints Bordeaux for the dinner table.
