Le Chiuse, Brunello di Montalcino, 2021
From cradle-of-Brunello vines, this is the kind of Sangiovese you can scarcely put the glass down. Le Chiuse sits on the north-east slope of Montosoli at the northern end of Montalcino — a cooler, more aromatic side of the appellation — and the estate's seven hectares are entirely Sangiovese Grosso. The family connection runs deep: Lorenzo Magnelli, who today runs winemaking, is the great-great-grandson of Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, and Le Chiuse fruit fed the original Biondi-Santi Riservas until 1990. The 2021 vintage gave the estate a beautifully balanced wine of ripe-fruited intensity and elegant restraint, the kind of textbook north-side Montalcino that ages effortlessly for two decades. A serious Brunello of grace and lift.
