Lenkey Pinceszet, Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos, 2000 (500mL)
The wine that made the Lenkey name famous, from a vintage many consider one of Tokaj's greatest in decades. This was only the second Aszu that Geza Lenkey Sr. produced at the family estate, and he died before it was bottled; it went on to become a Hungarian byword for great Tokaji. Aszu is made from individual berries shriveled by noble rot in the fog where the Bodrog and Tisza rivers meet, then fermented wild and aged three years in tiny traditional gonci casks. At 6 Puttonyos, this is the sweetest, most concentrated tier, with around 168 grams of residual sugar. Now 25 years on, it's fully mature: deep, nutty, and layered, with sweetness held in check by Tokaj's electric acidity. A 500ml bottle worth savoring slowly.
