Les-a-Les, Quinta das Mares Jampal, 2023
A rare bottle of Portuguese viticultural heritage. Jampal is one of the rarest white grapes in the world — fewer than three hectares planted globally — and this wine is one of the very few that takes it seriously. Lés-a-Lés, working with the Quinta das Marés estate in Alenquer (Lisboa region), bottles Jampal blended with another native white, Vital, both organically farmed. The fermentation is wild, with 30% raised in used 228L barrels for six months then finished in stainless on lees for another six. The result is a deeply individual white — quince, white plum, dried fruit, a savory bitter twist, and the kind of vibrant, mineral-driven acidity that makes you want to put a plate of grilled fish in front of it. A geek wine in the best sense.
