Louis-Claude Desvignes, Morgon Chateau Gaillard, 2024
Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes occupies an 18th-century house in Villié-Morgon with a vaulted cellar dug into the pink granite hillside. The family has grown Gamay here for eight generations. Louis-Claude's son Claude-Emmanuelle now manages the estate's 14 hectares, all farmed organically and certified since 2019. Château Gaillard is a lieu-dit in the heart of Morgon adjacent to the famous Côte du Py, planted on decomposed schist and granite soils that give wines of notable structure and minerality. Whole-cluster fermented with semi-carbonic maceration, aged in older foudres. The 2024 shows the purity of a cooler vintage—violet and red cherry aromatics, silky tannins, and that distinctive Morgon earthiness on the finish. A benchmark Beaujolais from one of the region's most respected families. Serve slightly cool with terrines, roasted chicken, or mushroom dishes.
