Lucien Crochet, Sancerre Blanc "Le Chene Marchand", 2020
The flagship white from one of Sancerre's most respected old-guard houses, in a vintage now hitting its stride. Domaine Lucien Crochet, based in the village of Bué, owns one of the great holdings on the famous Le Chêne Marchand slope — Bué's Kimmeridgian and Oxfordian limestone outcrop, in the heart of Sancerre's most age-worthy terroir. Harvest is early to preserve acid, the wine stays ten months on the lees for textural depth, and around 15% sees large neutral oak. 2020 was a warm, balanced Loire vintage that's now five years in — exactly when serious Sancerre starts to show its mature side, layering stone-fruit richness over the chalky, racy spine. With another decade of upside ahead, this is the proof that Sancerre belongs in the conversation with white Burgundy.
