Maison Stephan, Cote-Rotie Coteaux de Bassenon, 2023
Natural-wine Cote-Rotie from the southern tip of the appellation, where the last vines run right up against Condrieu. Jean-Michel Stephan and son Romain farm Coteaux de Bassenon organically by horse, then co-ferment a field blend of old-vine Syrah, Serine and Viognier with carbonic maceration and zero added sulfur. The dark migmatite and biotite soils and the splash of Viognier give a wine that is perfumed and silky rather than brooding, twenty-four months in old Troncais oak adding depth without obscuring the fruit. Neither fined nor filtered, it is a transparent, energetic take on one of France's great Syrah hillsides. Decant a young bottle and it sings.
