Maison Stephan, Cote-Rotie Coteaux de Tupin, 2023
A single-parcel Cote-Rotie made entirely from Serine, the older, lower-yielding strain of Syrah found only around this hillside. Jean-Michel and Romain Stephan farm Coteaux de Tupin on the pale granite of the Cote Blonde, working the steep slope by hand and winch, then ferment whole-bunch and age twenty-four months in old oak with no sulfur added. Serine gives a wine of perfume and tension rather than sheer power, the granite lending lift and a fine, savory grip. This is purist, low-intervention Northern Rhone Syrah at its most transparent. Give a young bottle air and time in the glass.
