Manenti, Sicilia Nero d'Avola, 2020

Guglielmo and Marita Manenti purchased their vineyards in Vittoria in 2005 and began producing wine in 2006. The 4-hectare organic estate produces limited quantities annually, with the couple personally tending vineyards using biological farming and minimal intervention. They're members of I Vigneri, Salvo Foti's consortium uniting like-minded Sicilian traditionalists. Nero d'Avola—Sicily's most important indigenous red grape, named for the town of Avola in Siracusa province—has been cultivated since Greek colonization (8th-6th century BC). Manenti's vines are planted using traditional bush vine (Albarello) training at 6,000 vines per hectare, with limestone beneath the soil providing natural water retention in Sicily's hot, dry summers. The 2020 shows ripe cherry, black plum, and wild strawberry with black pepper, dried herbs, and earthy undertones. Medium-bodied with firm yet supple tannins and a lingering mineral finish. Authentic Sicilian character from dedicated small producers.
