Mayacamas Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder, 2016
Mayacamas is the great counter-argument to plush, oaky Napa. Perched high on Mount Veeder, an uplifted ancient seabed of sandstone and shale (the Napa mountain not built on volcanic rock), the estate has been making uncompromising, old-school Cabernet since the Taylor family took over in 1941, aged in large neutral casks to let the mountain speak. This is Cabernet built on structure, acidity and mineral clarity rather than sweetness and weight, from high-elevation vines and naturally tiny yields. The 2016 comes from one of Napa's finest recent vintages, a beautifully balanced year, and while it is drinking well now with a decant, it is still very much a young wine with decades ahead. A classic for anyone who loves Cabernet with grip and patience.
