Michel Guignier, Morgon Vieilles Vignes, 2024
Soil-driven, ethereal Morgon from one of the Beaujolais natural scene's quiet purists. Michel Guignier is a fourth-generation vigneron in Villié-Morgon who farms organically and biodynamically, picking 60-year-old Gamay vines from prime spots that include the bottom of Côte du Py, La Roche Pilée and Les Grands Cras. The 2024 Morgon Vieilles Vignes sees a short semi-carbonic maceration, no additions, and élevage in tank on the lees, so each parcel keeps its voice. The result is transparent and joyful: fragrant red fruit, granitic minerality, an earthy sous-bois undertow, and the kind of elegance you'd hope for from old-vine Gamay on schistous slopes. Light on its feet, deeply Morgon — drink with a faint chill and slightly too much food.
