Mullineux, Chenin Blanc Roundstone 'Schist', 2021
The label tells you exactly what's in the glass: Schist. Chris and Andrea Mullineux farm across the Swartland on three different soils and bottle a Chenin Blanc from each. This is the schist parcel, from their Roundstone farm on the Kasteelberg so you can taste the rock. This is the schist parcel, where the tile-like stones hold little water and force the vines to struggle, dialing up structure and concentration. The result is the taut, high-nerve, saline one, more austere and mineral than its granite sibling. It rewards patience, so don't be shy about giving it a few years.
