Nino Negri, Ca Brione Bianco Alpi Retiche, 2022
An Alpine white from one of Valtellina's defining houses. Nino Negri has been making wine in Chiuro since 1897, best known for their Sforzato and cru Nebbiolo from Lombardy's near-vertical terraces. Ca' Brione, first bottled in 1986, is their white statement: a high-elevation blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Incrocio Manzoni and roughly 10% Nebbiolo Chiavennasca vinified as a white. The grapes come off the Rhaetian Alps' steep south-facing terraces, where temperature swings and shallow soils keep the wine taut and saline. Fermented in stainless, then aged at least six months on the fine lees in neutral barrique, the 2022 is mineral, lifted and a little wild — the kind of white that tastes like the place it came from. Hard to pin down, easy to keep drinking.
