Oddero, Barolo Mondoca di Bussia Soprana (tattered labels), 1995
A 1995 Barolo from Mondoca, a tiny parcel at the top of Bussia Soprana that yields only around 3,500 bottles. Oddero, a historic estate based in La Morra now run by the Oddero women, made this the traditional way: a long maceration and three years in big old oak botti, no shortcuts. Thirty years on, the Nebbiolo has moved fully into its tertiary register, tar and dried rose, balsamic, sweet leather. Honest note: this bottle's labels are tattered and worn, exactly what you'd expect from a mature Barolo of this age, and no reflection on what's inside. A living, fully mature classic.
