Outward Wines, Chenin Blanc Shell Creek Vineyard Paso Robles, 2024
Outward Wines was founded in 2016 by Natalie Siddique and Ryan Pace, a couple who met while rock climbing—the name honors their shared love of the outdoors. Ryan comes from a wine family (his father managed Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and brings a minimalist winemaking philosophy. Shell Creek Vineyard is historic: planted in 1972 by the Sinton family, it was among the first vineyards in San Luis Obispo County. The old, own-rooted vines grow on alluvium overlaying marine limestone beneath limestone cliffs—fossils are visible in the hillside. This Chenin ferments with native yeasts in neutral oak and ages 10 months on lees, unfined and unfiltered. The result balances opulence and freshness: quince, pear, ginger, honey, and a stony mineral backbone. Only 340 cases produced.
