Peter Leipold, Obervolkacher Spatburgunder Trocken, 2023
Peter Leipold is exactly the kind of young grower that keeps German wine exciting. He came home to tiny Obervolkach in Franken in 2018 after stints with Keller and Burgundy's Liger-Belair, and he's now farming six hectares with obsessive care. This is his village-level Spatburgunder, German for Pinot Noir, and it drinks like a smart, fruit-forward introduction to what he does. Aged mostly in used barrels to keep the fruit front and center, it's dry, light, and full of energy. A whole lot of pedigree in a bottle that doesn't take itself too seriously.
