Pierre Jean Villa, Cote-Rotie "Carmina", 2022
Pierre-Jean Villa trained in Burgundy and helped revive the Northern Rhone's ancient vineyards before founding his own organic-farmed domaine in 2009, and Cote-Rotie is where his talent really shines. 'Carmina' is his Syrah from these steep, schist-and-granite slopes, the appellation that gives the grape its most aromatic, peppery, floral expression. Expect dark and red fruit, cracked pepper, grilled-meat savor and fine, supple tannins. It's drinking well now but has the structure to reward a few years in the cellar. Decant it if you open one young.
