Place of Changing Winds, Chardonnay Larderdark, 2023

One of the New World's most extreme vineyards is the story here — and it's a wild one. In Victoria's cool Macedon Ranges, ringed by the native Larderdark Forest that gives this Chardonnay its name, founder Robbie Walters planted roughly 45,000 vines across just over three hectares, at densities running as high as 33,000 vines per hectare. For context, most Australian vineyards run under 3,000 vines per hectare, and even Burgundy's densest plantings sit around 10,000. Packed that tight, the vines compete fiercely, yields shrink to almost nothing, and roots drive deep for concentration — in 2023, each vine gave barely a handful of fruit. The result is a tightly wound, cool-climate white built entirely around site, density, and restraint. Genuinely one of the most singular Chardonnays coming out of Australia.
