Place of Changing Winds, Syrah Grower Series #2, 2023
Robert Walters, the Bibendum founder behind some of Australia's most original wine projects, planted Place of Changing Winds in 2012 in Bullengarook, between Mount Bullengarook and Mount Macedon — a cool, windswept Victorian site farmed at the highest commercial vine density in the world. Burgundian thinking, Australian terroir. The Grower Series Syrah #2 sources fruit from two of his preferred Heathcote and Harcourt growers — predominantly whole-bunch fermented, aged in mostly neutral Stockinger casks and a concrete egg, bottled with patience. The result is perfumed, savory, structured Syrah with real lift: violets, peppered red fruit, charcuterie, and a long, mineral spine. Cool-climate Australian Syrah at its most thoughtful.
