Royal Tokaji Wine Co, Tokaj Furmint Dry The Oddity, 2018
An oddity no longer — dry Furmint has arrived, and Royal Tokaji's version is among the most convincing arguments for it. The estate was founded in 1990 by Hugh Johnson, the celebrated wine writer, who seized the moment when Tokaj's communist-era state holdings came up for sale. Those holdings included some of the region's greatest sites — vineyards classified 'first growth' in the world's earliest vineyard classification, predating Burgundy and Bordeaux. The grapes for this wine come from two of those legendary Mád vineyards: Szent Tamás and Nyulászó, steep, volcanic slopes with complex mineral soils. The result is a wine that's hard to pigeonhole — it has the intensity of great Furmint, the racy acidity and texture of fine Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, and a minerality all its own. Dry but never austere, this is Tokaj on its own terms.
