Sables Verts, Saumur Blanc, 2024
Saumur Blanc is one of the Loire's most underrated whites, and Sables Verts farms barely a hectare of Chenin among its mostly red holdings, which makes this a small but serious bottling. Caroline Meuree and Herve Malinge took over the historic domaine in 2019 and farm as naturally as possible (HVE-certified, with organic conversion underway). The name Sables Verts refers to the green marine sand beneath the tuffeau, the geological signature of the appellation and a reliable engine of Loire Chenin tension. The 2024 is taut, stony and gently citric, more chiselled than tropical, with the kind of saline drive that puts oysters and fresh goat cheese in mind before anything else.
