Sables Verts, Saumur-Champigny, 2023
Saumur-Champigny has quietly become one of the great red-wine values in France, and Sables Verts is one of the names making the case. The domaine took its name from the green-tinged marine sand layer beneath the Saumur tuffeau, the very terroir that gives the appellation its lift and digestibility. Caroline Meuree and Herve Malinge took over this old family estate in 2019 and farm it as naturally as they can, working toward organics across 15-plus hectares of Cabernet Franc and a sliver of Chenin. The 2023 is classic Saumur-Champigny: fresh, aromatic, gently peppery, with the sappy crunch that makes Loire Cab Franc such a brilliant pour at the table.
