Schafer-Frohlich, Riesling Fruhlingsplatzchen GG, 2024
If the Felseneck GG shows off blue slate, this one shows off red rock. Fruhlingsplatzchen is a grand cru in Monzingen and Tim Frohlich's only site of weathered red slate and rhyolite, iron-rich volcanic soil on a sun-drenched, wind-swept south-facing slope. The geology gives a completely different personality: herbal spice, salinity, and a gentler, rounder line where Felseneck is all cool tension. From roughly 50-year-old vines and made bone-dry with wild yeast, it's one of the more distinctive grand cru Rieslings in the Nahe. A great way to taste how much the rock matters.
