Schafer-Frohlich, Riesling Trocken Schiefergestein, 2024
The name means "slate rock," and that's the whole idea: this is Tim Frohlich's cult Nahe estate distilled into an everyday dry Riesling. It's drawn from blue Devonian slate, basalt, and quartz vineyards in Bockenau and Monzingen, including younger vines from the great Felseneck grand cru, so you get a real taste of the estate's flinty style without the grand cru price. Light, poor soils give it a filigree, crystalline quality. Bone-dry, taut, and zesty, it's the perfect introduction to why people chase these wines. Its sibling, the Vulkangestein, does the same trick from volcanic soil.
