It's drawn from blue Devonian slate, basalt, and quartz vineyards in Bockenau and Monzingen, including younger vines from the great Felseneck grand cru, so you get a real taste of the estate's flinty style without the grand cru price. Light, poor soils give it a filigree, crystalline quality. Bone-dry, taut, and zesty, it's the perfect introduction to why people chase these wines. Its sibling, the Vulkangestein, does the same trick from volcanic soil.
