Stakhovsky, Cabernet Sauvignon Ace, 2021
Sergiy Stakhovsky is best known for stunning Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, but his second act might be the more improbable one: proving Ukraine can make world-class wine. He caught the bug playing club tennis in Bordeaux, then rehabbed old vineyards near Muzhievo in Zakarpattia, in the Carpathian foothills on the Hungarian border, where limestone and volcanic clay soils go back generations. After Russia's 2022 invasion he joined the National Guard and went to the front, leaving his family to keep the winery running and exporting through the war. This is his dry, French-oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon: blackcurrant and ripe cherry with a firm structure. A remarkable red with a story you won't forget.
