Stefano Occhetti, Roero Riserva, 2021
A new-wave Roero from a producer who walked away from corporate life to come home. Stefano Occhetti was born in Monteu Roero, then spent years working as an engineer abroad before quitting in 2019 to take over his family's small parcel (roughly 1.8 hectares at the start, since expanded). The Riserva comes from the vineyard his grandfather planted in 1945 — gnarled, low-yielding Nebbiolo in Roero's famous sand-rich soils. The 2020 vintage was the first year Stefano separated out the oldest vines for this bottling, and 2021 continues the project. Spontaneous fermentation, no shortcuts, aged in French oak. Roero sits across the Tanaro from Barolo and Barbaresco; sandy soils give Nebbiolo a perfumed, lifted character that drinks earlier than the Langhe heavyweights — but in Riserva form, with old-vine concentration, has serious staying power.
