Thomas Winery, Pinot Noir Dundee Hills, 2007

Three hundred and seventy-five cases. No tasting room, no website, no public events. John Thomas produces one of Oregon's most sought-after cult Pinot Noirs from just four acres of dry-farmed sedimentary soil in the Dundee Hills—and has done so quietly since his first vintage in 1992. Frequently described as the most Burgundian of American Pinot Noirs, Thomas wines achieve their character through restraint: minimal intervention, small-lot production, and the WillaKenzie sedimentary soils that give this site its signature spice and red fruit. The 2007 vintage was difficult—rain arrived in late September just as vineyards approached ripeness—but the cool conditions produced wines of lower sugar, higher acid, and exceptional aromatic complexity. Now nearly two decades old, this Thomas reveals baking spices, pure red fruits, strawberry, cranberry, and floral notes with the developed secondary character of aged Burgundy. For collectors who value transparency over power.
