Old-school Alexander Valley Merlot, made with Pomerol on the brain. Trig Point is the site-specific project Nick and Yolyn Goldschmidt launched in 1998 after Nick's decades running Simi and other major California houses. The Diamond Dust Vineyard lies just south of Geyserville in the cooler southern stretch of Alexander Valley, where slightly richer soils give Merlot more depth and grip without sacrificing freshness. The 2023 is 100% Merlot (clone 337), hand-harvested, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged 12 months in used oak so the fruit can speak first. Expect a bold, velvety mouthful of red cherry, blueberry and plum with cocoa-dusted edges and supple, polished tannins. Approachable now, plush enough for the table tonight, and built to flatter a steak.
