von Winning, Kalkofen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, 2022
Weingut von Winning from Pfalz's Deidesheim produces a Riesling from the prestigious Deidesheimer Kalkofen vineyard. This is a VDP.GROSSEN LAGE (German Grand Cru equivalent) from a sheltered site surrounded by sandstone walls, sitting above a former coral reef (limestone). The plateau site has limestone-dominated soil with loess-loam and marl clay, abundant limestone gravel, and south-facing exposure.
The 2022 Kalkofen Riesling Grosses Gewächs (dry Grand Cru) is fermented spontaneously in 500L barrels and left on gross lees for 18 months. The result is a dense and creamy Riesling with juiciness and smoothness; fine Riesling raciness; dense fruit core with juiciness and fine texture; yellow peach; rich fruit with piquant mineral structure carrying to the finish. At four years old, the wine shows beautiful complexity and integration. This is a wine for those seeking sophisticated German Riesling with real substance—dense, creamy, mineral-driven. The limestone terroir creates distinctive mineral character.
