Weingut Leitz, Schlossberg Riesling Ehrenfels Grosses Gewachs, 2021
A Grosses Gewächs from one of the steepest slate cliffs on the Rhine. Berg Schlossberg sits above Rüdesheim where the river bends sharply north, and its 65 percent slope of red slate and quartzite is held in place by ancient stone walls. The Ehrenfels parcel takes its name from the castle ruin that watches over the site, and Johannes Leitz farms it as a flagship dry Riesling within his stable of GGs. The 2021 vintage was cool and classical in the Rheingau — exactly the kind of year that makes Schlossberg sing, with electric acidity and a deeply salty, smoky minerality. Concentrated yellow stone fruit, white peach, lime pith, and that signature pulse of warm slate. A serious bottle that will reward years in the cellar.
