Xavier Gerard, Cote-Rotie, 2021
Xavier Gérard is one of Côte-Rôtie’s rising stars, crafting wines that highlight the finesse and aromatic complexity that make the appellation so revered. Farming organically and working with old vines across some of the region’s top lieux-dits, he produces Syrah that leans into purity and site expression rather than excess weight. The 2021 vintage, a cooler and more classically styled year, plays perfectly into his restrained, terroir-driven approach.
Floral and lifted, the nose bursts with blackberry, black cherry, and crushed violets, underscored by hints of black pepper, smoked meat, and wet stone. The palate is structured yet silky, with finely grained tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. While it’s already showing beautifully with a decant, a few years in the cellar will only enhance its depth. A perfect match for roast duck, grilled lamb, or earthy mushroom dishes, this is Côte-Rôtie at its most refined and expressive.
