Bartolo Mascarello, Barolo, 2008

There is no single-vineyard Mascarello Barolo—there never has been. Bartolo himself believed that blending all his parcels together produced a more complete wine than any one site alone, and his daughter Maria Teresa continues that tradition. Fruit from Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rué, and Rocche dell'Annunziata is cofermented in old cement and wooden vats for thirty to fifty days, then aged three years in large 2,500-liter Slavonian oak botti. No temperature control, no small barriques, no concessions to fashion. The 2008 was a classic, challenging Piedmont vintage: spring storms, disease pressure, and a late ripening cycle rescued by warm, dry weather from mid-August onward. The resulting wine is all elegance and structure—red cherry, dried rose, tar, and iron—with the tannins and acidity to evolve for decades. Only about twelve hundred and fifty cases made. The purest expression of traditional Barolo still in production.
