Bernard Baudry, Chinon Blanc La Croix Boisee, 2017
Bernard Baudry runs a multi-generational family estate in Chinon committed to organic farming and traditional methods. Harvests are 100% manual with a 50-person team for sorting. La Croix Boissée Blanc comes from a painfully rare 0.5-hectare parcel in Cravant planted by Bernard in 1994—making this "the greatest white Chinon." The south-exposed slope overlooks the Vienne River with clay-rich soils over white tuffeau limestone and iron. Only 2% of Chinon is white, though historically white Chinon was among the world's most sought wines when Dutch and English merchants developed the market. Winemaking is non-interventionist: native yeast fermentation, aging in 2-year-old or older barriques, no fining or filtration. The 2017 shows sappy pine, wet stones, and delicate florals with layers of fruit, spice, and energetic minerality. Firm body with chalky structure, complex and well-suited to further aging. A rare expression of Chenin Blanc from red wine country.
